THE LAND OF FIRE AND ICE

ICELAND LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Iceland was always a place I wanted to visit and photograph. I had seen tons of amazing images from friends and social media so it was a dream to finally visit the country in 2016. However I didnt quiet anticipate how much of an impact Iceland would have on me. I felt a deep connection with its epic and magical landscapes and was completlely mesmerised by its wonders.

When I returned home I decided that I would start a personal project and photograph Iceland throughout its seasons. The goal was to capture iceland during different weather conditions and see as much of it as possible!

From its huge waterfalls to its agressive mountains and powerful seascapes here is a collection of my favourite Iceland photographs from winter, autumm and summer.

From my experiences of shooting Iceland during summer, autumm, spring and winter I simply cannot tell you which is my favourite time to visit. From experiencing 5 hour golden hours during the midnight sun to chasing northern lights in winter Iceland literally has it all. It is a true photographers playground. Despite being heavily photographed I still consider that there are endless photgraphic opportunities and unique compositions to be made. Even though I have been there 5 times already it is a new experience each and every time. I will therefore continue to explore Iceland for many years to come.

Kirkufell sunrise midnight sun.jpg

The first photo here is of the famous Kirkjufell. The light is truly special in Iceland as I was presented with one of most memorable sunsets/sunrises I have witnessed. I met a metorologist here who drove 5 hours across the country to capture this light as he said he had never seen anything like it before. It lasted for 5 hours and was certainly special.

A cold and bitter morning at Diamond Beach during winter. There are endless compositions here but it can also be a very chaotic scene with so much Ice. In this shot focused on capturing the movement of the water and placed the ice aslong the diagoanals across the frame.

I caught this fleeting moment of light during the autumm at Vestrahorn. I arrived to clear blue skies and flat light but when the sun set for a brief few minutes the light hit the mountains and countless grass mounds. I really liked the contrast of the black and yellow

The almight Skogofoss is by far my favourite waterfall in Iceland. It is particulary good as a location for photographing the northerlights as you need to face north when shooting the aurora. Due to the position of Skogofoss it thereofore makes for an excellent focal point. In this shot there is some ambient light hitting the waterfall which made for a nice effect highlighting the water.

These two images of the famous Kirkjufell were taken on same night a few hours apart. It was predicted to be 95% cloud cover and a low KP1. It couldnt have been more wrong! Chasing the aurora is an exciting experience knowing that they can be fleeting. Tt really just comes down to pure luck if you see them so it makes the experience even more special.

The first shot was taken 3.35 am where the show was at its strongest. The activiy was so powerful that you could literally see the lights with the naked eye. When watching a white silohette dancing in the sky above you just can help but feel in awe of mother nature.

The 2nd shot was taken when the activity was more subtle and slower moving. I still found it incredbly beautiful as rather than defined lines it was if there was a huge green cloud over us instead. Magical to witness.

Sea Arch sunset v2 copy (3).jpg

The Dryhjoley sea Arch -It is intimidating, absolutely huge and exceptionally unique. I shot this at 400mm just as the light started to piece through for a brief moment. It was an impressive sight seeing the rays piece through the arch. I will never forget this special moment.

The movement of the water in the stream of Skogofoss can be quiet aggressive if it has been raining. This makes for some great compositions if you can get into the water to capture it

Bruarfoss and its neon coloured water was onf of my favourite locations In Iceland. This was captured at half a second shutter to get the mix of movement and blurry water.

Vestrahorn mountain in the east of Iceland. Vestrahorn is uniquely shaped and is also known as the Batman mountain due to its distinct jagged edges and shapes.

This caputure of one of the 'trolls’ at reynisdrangar was taken on a very bleak and windy sunrise. The waves this morning were violently aggressive. I caught some of the sunrise pinks emerging but it didnt full materialise. I still however loved the muted tones of the scene

It is amazing to experience the same locations during different seasons and conditions. This capture was taken during the summer months. It was so calm and peaceful here watching the sun rise - such a contrast to my winter visit.

icecave Jan 21 TOPAZ GIGA ADDED copy.jpg

Every year the Icecaves are completely unique and a one off. This icecave named ‘Treasure Island’ was undoubtedly the most impressive ice structure I saw during the winter.

Due to the bright lights and dark shadows i needed to bracket my shots at this locations. This shot is a composite of 3 captures.

Abstract patterns and beautiful textures can be found everywhere in Iceland. This shot of a glacier was taken at 400mm

A glorious sunset/sunrise during the midnight sun of June. I have never experience light like this before which unusually went on for 4 hours!
