THE HIDDEN GEM OF EUROPE

FAROE ISLANDS LANDSCAPE AND AERIAL PHOTOGAPHY

The Faroes Islands…so remote and seemingly undiscovered by the rest of the world. The country comprises of 18 magical islands each with their own feel and character. When you arrive into the Faroes you can’t help but feel that you are in a completely different world. The unspolied and idyllic landscape full of huge valleys and grand cliffs are absolutly mesmerising.

I have been thinking about the Faroes for many years. Curiously wondering what is there to be explored, see and experience. It has been slowly gaining popluarity amongst the photography community and avid nature lovers so i decided to go before mass tourism reaches its shores.

The small town of Gjojv is unique due to its natural harbour which is perfectly carved into the cliff side.

During the trip strangley there was little wind so this made for optimal flying conditions. Below is a short video of my favourite aerial moments and timelapes from the project.

The light is undoubtedly special in the Faroes. Strange things happen to it! Im still unsure how these rays shot up like this but it was magical to witness.

Funningar clouds v1 copy.jpg

This capture was taken on the Funningar hike. By chance I looked back to see these immense clouds develop and engulf the huge mountain behind us. They flowed so fast it was like there were waves in the mountain.

Trees are rare in the Faroes as they are not native to the islands. The Viðarlundin forest in the town of Kunoy had a mysterious and special feel to it. Although it is very small when you are inside you cant help but feel its enchanting atmosphere.

Dramatic waves at the town of Eioi. I fired off many shots here looking for the right wave combination. You may notice that the cliffs look like the face of a man, or troll! I didnt actually see this until i got the images back home and actually couldnt believe what I had captured. Trolls really do exist!

Klaksvik really lights up at night. This town is unique as it is located between 2 inlets which leads to the main harbour. I took this just after sunset so technically is a twighlight shot. I was quiet lucky to capture the glow of the sun in the backround so the timing was just right.

The town you see to the right you is Vestmanna and on this occasion the sun was setting behind it. It was a surprising sight to see this light as 10 minutes before hand I was looking at complete cloud cover. The timing was perfect as just as the sun was setting the clouds seperated.

Fossa - Is the tallest waterfall in the Faroes. Although the waterfall was fairly small due to no rain for a few days, i loved the light and dramatic clouds in this scene. This is a panoramic shot of 5 images.

The hike to Funningar takes around 30 minutes. Once you get to the top you will be rewarded with this impressive view.

The little town of Tjørnuvík is located inside this huge valley. It literally feels like this is the last settlement at the end of the earth.

There were strong winds at this location which meant i couldnt fly very far. So instead I captured 6 images and stiched them together. This location is a hidden gem not that far from the capital.

My Faroes Island summer photography and aerial adventure was absolutly amazing. It was facinating to see the beautiful landscapes that the country had to offer. I can honetly say that some of my most memorable shooting experiences were made on this trip. I am used to battling against the elements when chasing the rare and elusive moments but the weather was very kind to me. This still made for some unique and interesting conditions which I did not expect. I was rewarded with some amazing views and some awesome experiences.
